Camp Ranger:

The Camp Ranger is available during working hours (except for emergency situations). Please coordinate your requirements when you make your camp reservation. Camp Byng’s Ranger Brent Rowland, at campbyng@scouts.ca
 

Arrival and Departure:

  • On arrival at camp, Scouter/ Group Leaders/Contact Persons MUST check-in with the Camp Ranger. The Camp Ranger will take you on a tour through the lodge or camping meadow you have booked and will explain the operation of the camp, the proper use of camp facilities and any issues or concerns that you may have.
  • The Camp Ranger will be available at checkout time to go over the site before you leave camp. Please let the Camp Ranger know in advance which ferry you will be trying to catch to ensure there is adequate time for the pre-departure inspection.
  • Groups are responsible for all clean-up of lodges, campsites, shelters, washrooms, or other areas used by the group while at camp.
  • A cleaning charge may apply if the facility is not cleaned properly.
  • All garbage is to be placed in the garbage dumpster located in the Skeena parking lot.
  • Cardboard and boxboard (e.g. cereal boxes) are to be flattened and placed in the cardboard dumpster in the Skeena parking lot.

    • Please practice “Leave No Trace” camping while at camp and leave Camp Byng cleaner than you found it.
     

    Risk Management:

  • All campers are expected and follow Scouts Canada’s By Laws Policies & Procedures (BP&P) while at Camp Byng. This document is available at www.scouts.ca on the ‘Scouters’ page. The pertinent information is in Section 7000 – Duty of Care and Section 10000- Camping and Outdoor Activities.
  • All Scout groups are required at a minimum to follow Scouts Canada’s procedures as outlined in the Camping/Outdoor Activity Guide.
  • Each Scout group must obtain their own signed Camping and Outdoor Activity Application Form if necessary.
  • Group leaders are responsible for providing their own safety checks and adequate water activity supervision for youth within 3 meters of the water, or on/in the water.
  • Scout groups must have appropriate documentation for each person attending the camp as set out in Scouts Canada’s By-Laws Policies and Procedures.
  • For Third Party rentals of the camp and where the camp is entirely booked by the third party, please contact the Camp Ranger at campbyng@scouts.ca for further information.

    First Aid:

  • The First-Aider (should have a minimum Standard First Aid certification) preferably by St. John Ambulance or The Canadian Red Cross.
  • First Aid supplies MUST be supplied by the renting Group.
  • Any injury or incident which occurs on Camp Byng property must be reported to the Camp Ranger as soon as possible.

    • A Scouts Canada Incident Report Form must be filed with Scouts Canada, National Service Centre and a copy sent to the BCY Service Centre as per the instructions on the form.
     

    Things Not Aloud At Camp:

  • Smoking on property
  • Drugs and Alcohol:
  • Vans, RV’s, Campers, and Trailers: Parking for cars and small trucks is allowed in designated parking areas only. Vehicles parked illegally will be subject to towing at the owners expense.
  • Roadways and access to lodges and meadows/fields must be kept clear for emergency vehicles at all times.
  • Speed limit is 20 km/hr throughout the camp.
  • Motorcycles, Quads, All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) etc., are not permitted for use at camp.
  • Pets
  • Taping, Tacking, Stapling, or Nailing on walls on buildings, interior and exterior, and on trees.
  • Candles and other flames – open or contained, are not permitted in sleeping hulls or tents – please use battery-powered devices only.
  • Camp lanterns, stoves and heaters are not to be used in sleeping hulls or tents.
  • Please leave the Memorabilia alone.
  • Do NOT place, hang or attach any items to walls, ceilings or rafters in any of the lodges or buildings.
  • Water and Swimming Regulations (ocean). Swimming is not recommended at the Camp Byng beach due to tides and under tow currents. A qualified Lifeguard with NLS Waterfront certification (provided by the rental group) must be in attendance for all waterfront activities. All water sport regulations are to be followed as per Section 10000- Camping and Outdoor Activities.
  • Fires are permitted only in designated campfire sites. Fires are NOT permitted on the waterfront foreshore. Charcoal fires must be laid in the campfire area only or in a BBQ. Be cautious with outdoor cooking fires and lodge fireplaces.
  • During hot dry weather, fire restrictions WILL be applied – you may not be able to have a campfire – see the Camp Ranger for details.
  • Firearms, Fireworks, Paint Ball Guns, Sling Shots:
     
    General Camp Guidelines:
  • Leaders are responsible for the health, safety and conduct of their camp participants.
  • Group leaders are responsible for their youth at all times.
  • Groups are responsible for their own first aid personnel and equipment.
  • Trees must not be cut on or off the property unless designated by the Camp Ranger.
  • Flagging tape and all trail markers must be removed on completion of the activity.
  • Drinking water must be obtained only from designated sources of supply – surface water and streams are UNSAFE.
  • Personal washing and washing of dishes must be done at the unit campsites or in designated areas – not at the water taps.
  • Bull horns are not to be used anywhere at camp.
  • Raiding of other tents, sleeping hulls, lodges and camp sites is prohibited.
  • Out-of-Bound Areas – Streambeds, roadways, workshop buildings and area, Camp Ranger’s residence, private property located outside of the camp boundary, spiritual center behind the archery range and other areas as marked.
  • Any graffiti, vandalism, damage to buildings or equipment, etc., will be charged to the group.
  • Each group is to arrive self-sufficient for all camping needs. If you are needing assistants, please contact the Camp Ranger.
  • Everything brought onto the site by the group is to be removed by the group.
  • Food must be properly contained within the cooking areas. There are bears and other wildlife in the area.
  • Grey water disposal needs to occur per good camping practice and at least 25 meters from the ocean, streams, culverts and camp site areas. Food residue must be strained and put in the garbage. The KYBOs (outdoor washroom buildings), outhouses or washrooms are not to be to dispose of grey water.
  • KYBOs are available and are to be used for bodily functions only and are to be left in a better condition than found.
  • Sound conservation and environmental practices shall be observed. No standing trees or vegetation are to be cut or harmed.
