Camp Rules
The Camp Law is the Scout Law.
Camp Ranger:
The Camp Ranger's services should be utilized during working hours (except for emergency situations). Please co-ordinate your requirements at the time that you make your camp reservation.
Arrival at and Departure from Camp Byng:On arrival at camp, Leaders/Contact Persons MUST check in with the Camp Ranger. The Camp Ranger will tour you through the lodge or camping meadow you have booked on arrival and will explain the operation of the camp and any issues or concerns he/she may have.
The Camp Ranger will also be available at checkout time to go over the site before you leave camp. Please let the Camp Ranger know in advance which ferry you will be trying to catch to ensure there is time for the pre-departure inspection.
Thank you for leaving Camp Byng cleaner than you found it.
First Aid:
- The First-Aider and First Aid supplies are to be supplied by the renting Group.
- Any significant injury or incident that occurs on Camp Byng property must be reported to the Camp Ranger as soon as possible.
Tobacco:
Drugs and Alcohol:
- Use or possession of any alcohol or recreational drug/substance is not permitted.
Vans, RV's, Campers and Trailers:
- Note that all people attending the camp must sleep in a lodge, in a sleeping hull, or in a tent. Sleeping in vans, campers, trailers, RVs, etc., is not permitted.
- Parking for cars and small trucks is in designated parking areas only.
- Roadways and access to lodge buildings must be kept clear for emergency vehicles at all times.
- Speed limit at all camps 10 kilometers per hour.
- Motorcycles, Quads, All Terrain Vehicles, etc, are not to be used at camp.
Pets:
- Pets are not permitted at Camp Byng - please leave all pets at home or make other arrangements for them.
Tape, Tacks, Staples, Nails:
- No tape except low-tack masking tape may be used on the walls inside the lodges.
- No tacks, staples, nails etc., are to be used on buildings (inside or out) or on any trees at camp.
Lighting in Sleeping Hulls and Tents:
- Candles and other flames, open or contained, are not permitted in sleeping hulls or tents – use battery-powered devices only.
- Camp lanterns, stoves and heaters are not to be used in sleeping hulls or tents.
Memorabilia:
- No unauthorized items are to be hung, placed, or attached on walls, ceilings or rafters in any buildings without permission.
Water and Swimming Regulation (Ocean):
- Swimming is not recommended at the Camp Byng beaches due to tides and currents.
- A qualified Lifeguard must be in attendance for all water events (provided by the rental group).
- The group’s first aid kit and appropriate life saving equipment must accompany all waterfront activities.
- Personal flotation devices must be worn at all times when boating.
- Close down swim program when complete.
- Note that rocks west of the beach are hazardous.

Fires:
- Fires are permitted only at designated campfire sites.
- No fires on the waterfront foreshore.
- Charcoal fires must be laid in the campfire area only or in a barbeque.
- Be cautious with outdoor cooking fires and lodge fireplaces.
- During hot dry weather, fire restrictions WILL be applied – you may not be able to have a campfire at all – see the Camp Ranger for details.
- Firewood is provided at most camp areas. Please confirm on booking.
- If firewood is not supplied, you must bring your own.
- Do not cut down trees for firewood.
- Chainsaws are not permitted at camp.
Firearms, Fireworks, Paint Ball Guns, Sling Shots:
- Firearms, fireworks, paint ball guns, sling shots, and similar devices, are not allowed in camp.
General Camp Guidelines:
- Leaders are responsible for the health, safety and conduct of their camps and all of their camp participants.
- Group leaders are responsible for their youth at all times.
- Groups are responsible for your own first aid personnel and equipment.
- Trees must not be cut on or off the property unless designated by the Camp Ranger.
- Flagging tape and all trail markers must be removed on completion of the activity.
- Drinking water must be obtained only from designated sources of supply – surface water and streams are UNSAFE.
- Personal washing and washing of dishes must be done on the unit campsites or designated areas – not at the water taps.
- Appropriate dishwashing procedures must be followed.
- Bull horns are not to be used anywhere at camp.
- Raiding of other tents, sleeping hulls, lodges and camp sites is prohibited.
- Out-of-Bound Areas – Streambeds, roadways, workshop buildings and area, residences, private property located outside of camp boundary, spiritual centre, behind the archery range and other areas as marked.
- Any graffiti, vandalism, damage to buildings or equipment, etc., will be charged to the group.
- Groups are responsible for all clean up of Lodges, campsites, shelters, washrooms, or other areas used by the groups while at camp. Thank you for leaving the camp better than you found it.
- A cleaning charge may apply if need be.
- All garbage is to be placed in the garbage dumpster located in the Skeena parking lot.
- Cardboard and boxboard (e.g. cereal boxes) is to be flattened and placed in the cardboard dumpster in the Skeena parking lot.
- All noise must cease by 11:00 p.m. out of respect for our neighbours.
Camping Practice
- Each group is to arrive self-sufficient for all camping needs.
- Everything brought onto the site by the group is to be removed by the group.
- Food must be properly contained within the cooking areas. There are bears and other wildlife in the area.
- Grey water disposal per good camping practice and at least 25 metres from the ocean, streams, culverts and camp site areas. Food residue must be strained and put in garbage. The KYBOs (outdoor washroom buildings), outhouses or washrooms are not to be used for grey water.
- KYBOs are available and are to be used for bodily functions only and are to be left in better condition than found.
- Sound conservation and environmental practices shall be observed. No standing trees or vegetation are to be cut or harmed.
Risk Management:
- All Scout groups are required at minimum to follow Scouts Canada's procedures per the Camping/Outdoor Activity Guide.
- Each Scout group must obtain their own signed Camping and Outdoor Activity Application Form.
- Group leaders are responsible for providing their own safety checks and adequate water activity supervision for youth within 3 metres of the water, or on/in the water.
- Scout groups must have appropriate documentation for each person attending camp as set out in Scouts Canada’s By-Laws.
